An outline turns a vague idea into an ordered argument. Use this template to plan your essay before you draft it.
Basic outline
- Introduction — hook, background, and thesis statement.
- Body paragraph 1 — claim, evidence, and reasoning.
- Body paragraph 2 — claim, evidence, and reasoning.
- Body paragraph 3 — claim, evidence, and reasoning.
- Counterargument — the opposing view and your rebuttal.
- Conclusion — restated thesis and summary of the argument.
Filling in each section
For each body paragraph, write one sentence that states the claim and list the evidence you will cite beneath it. If you cannot find evidence for a claim, the claim probably needs revising.
Why outlining helps
An outline reveals gaps in your reasoning before you write. It also ensures the counterargument appears as its own section rather than an afterthought. For guidance on the central claim, see our thesis guide, or review how to write an argumentative essay for the full process.
